Join us for a public dedication ceremony on May 20, 2024, to honor and celebrate Soledad Chávez de Chacón, New Mexico’s first female Secretary of State. Chávez de Chacón, elected in 1922 shortly after women were granted the right to vote, was New Mexico’s first female Secretary of State, a position that under the circumstances of the time required her to briefly serve as the Governor of New Mexico. Chávez de Chacón was also the first Hispanic woman elected to statewide office in the nation. A historic marker commemorating her accomplishments now stands at the entrance to the Bataan Building, the former Capitol building in Santa Fe where she worked.
Keynote speaker: Maggie Toulouse Oliver, current New Mexico Secretary of State
